The Only Three Skincare Products You’ll Ever Need

Welcome to my latest blog – your ultimate guide to mastering the skincare universe!

Over the years, I’ve spent far too much time researching skincare products. I’ve read countless dermatology reports and even completed a diploma in skincare and makeup, so hopefully this three-minute read will save you hours of research!

Whether you’re a skincare novice or a seasoned pro, I’ll cut through the noise and explain the products that really make a difference. Let’s face it – skincare should be fun, not frustrating! And for all you men reading this, lines and wrinkles aren’t gender-specific. Wouldn’t you like a pass to the fountain of youth too? It’s certainly less work than perfecting your fantasy football team, and your mates will be jealous of your glowing skin. 😊

I won’t state the obvious about cleansing properly and wearing sunscreen every day—you’ve heard that before. However, if you decide to introduce retinol into your routine, sunscreen becomes even more important because retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Now, onto the one product that has made the biggest difference to my skin: Retinol.

Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, offers some incredible benefits. It speeds up skin cell turnover, boosts collagen production, gently exfoliates the skin, and helps unclog pores. It has massively improved my skin texture, softening my “not so” fine lines and wrinkles while helping with uneven skin tone and pigmentation.

After all those years of slapping on cooking oil and baking in the sun—yes, I was an 80s sunbathing specialist—my skin had plenty of catching up to do!

Retinol works by accelerating the natural process of shedding dead skin cells and replacing them with fresh ones, leaving skin smoother, brighter and more radiant. It also encourages the production of collagen, the protein responsible for keeping our skin firm and elastic, which naturally declines as we age. While I don’t suffer from many breakouts these days, retinol can also help unclog pores and reduce future spots.

A quick word of warning if you’re new to retinol.

Take it slowly.

I currently use it twice a week, and my skin loves it—but it took time to get there. I’d recommend starting with a concentration of 0.3% or lower, which is gentle enough for most people.

When I first discovered retinol, I did exactly what you shouldn’t do. I rushed out, bought a 1% concentration, and after two days my face was practically peeling off! Going in too strong can cause redness, dryness and irritation. Give your skin time to adjust, then gradually increase the strength or frequency if needed. Your skin will thank you later.

One important point: retinol isn’t recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so always seek advice from your healthcare professional if that applies to you.

Beyond retinol, my other two skincare heroes are Vitamin Cand Hyaluronic Acid.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Although there is some overlap with retinol, the two target different concerns. Vitamin C helps brighten the skin, reduce pigmentation and protect against environmental damage, while retinol is best known for stimulating collagen production, reducing wrinkles and improving overall skin texture.

Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture into the skin. It can hold over 1,000 times its weight in water, helping to hydrate, plump and soften the skin. It’s made a noticeable difference to mine.

My routine is simple: I use Vitamin C in the morning, and at night I alternate between retinol and Hyaluronic Acid.

So, how long does it take to see results?

With consistent use, you may notice subtle improvements within two to six weeks, while more significant changes often become visible after two to four months. Like most worthwhile things in life, patience pays off.

I should probably mention cost before I sign off. Being fairly budget-conscious, I tend to buy products from The Ordinary and No7. In my experience, they’re every bit as effective as many of the expensive brands because you’re paying for the ingredients rather than fancy packaging. The results don’t have to come with a mortgage!

As you embark on your skincare journey, products like retinol really can be game changers. By understanding your skin’s needs and introducing these ingredients gradually, you’re not just investing in a skincare routine—you’re investing in healthier, happier skin.

Your skin deserves its moment to shine… just like you.

Before I go, I’d like to say a quick word about my AS, as raising awareness of autoimmune disease is one of the reasons I write this blog.

Those of you who follow me on social media will know I was at Wembley last week watching my football team fight for promotion. We won, and I had an absolutely brilliant day. It started early, finished very late and involved rather more alcohol than usual!

The reason I’m sharing this is because of what happened afterwards. My body has only just started to recover. Living with an autoimmune disease means I have to manage my energy carefully, and a big blowout often triggers a flare-up. I don’t regret a second of it—it was an unforgettable day—but it was a gentle reminder that my body still has the final say. So if you’re living with a chronic illness too, enjoy yourself by all means… just remember that recovery sometimes takes longer than the celebration. 😊

“I regret investing in my skincare products,” said no one ever!

Until next time,

xxxxxxxx
